Days 114-117 - Streaky Bay (30 Dec - 2 Jan)

Happy New Year!

Hope everyone had a good celebration.  We celebrated on the foreshore and watched a fantastic display of fireworks put on by the Shire. Can understand why they say they are the best in SA!  We were about 200m away from them. There was group of us that got together for a BBQ and then positioned ourselves to get the best spot on the beach. For such a small town they were very impressive.  The show went on for 15 minutes and we have an edited version (below), that lasts about 5 mins.  There were two displays one for the kids and families at 10.00pm and then a smaller one at midnight. They were firing the fireworks from a barge about 50m offshore and directly off the beach.  No Occupational, Health and Safety concerns here!  There is a total fire ban here but didn't stop some idiots lighting a huge bonfire near scrub but the fire brigade soon had it out and hopefully fined them (the fine was up to $20,000) but we doubt that happened. We had Coco with us the first one which was a big mistake.  We thought she would be better with us where we could reassure her but we never imagined just how frightened she would be.  The poor thing was so stressed and John really had to hold on to her tightly as she wanted to bolt.   For the next lot we settled her in the van and turned the TV up so she couldn't hear them. A couple of dogs did run away but were eventually found, thank goodness.   We leave tomorrow (Sun) for Elliston 120kms east.  The park there has grassed sites so will be nice to get out of the dust.  Amazing how such small things can give you pleasure when travelling.  The weather here is so erratic, one day it is 42 only getting down to 30 at night the next day it drops to 22 and down to 15 at night.  Except for the hot days it is still really windy (and dusty!).  Hopefully as we move further east the temps will become more constant.  Have enjoyed the walks here, 12 mins into town and you can walk as long as you like along a paved footpath along the foreshore.  Will miss the walks.
